Disney Princess List with Pictures

Snow White

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (1)

Snow White is the first official Disney Princess. She is known for her kindness, gentleness and optimism. She has a love for nature and this can be seen in the movies when she sings “I’m Wishing” from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Her stepmother, the Evil Queen, wants Snow White killed because her magic mirror has pronounced Snow White as the fairest in the land. However, the Huntsman decides he cannot harm her, but instead tells her never to go back to the castle.

Snow White finds the 7 Dwarfs and continues to live with them until she is poisoned with an apple by her stepmother disguised as an old lady.

The Dwarfs place her in a glass-enclosed coffin not realizing she isn’t dead, but rather just in a deep sleep. A prince hears about the beautiful girl and sneaks in to see her. He kisses her and she awakens with love in her heart for him.

Did you know the story of Snow White did not originate with Walt Disney?

It is a German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm from 1812. Walt saw a live-action version of the story back in 1916 in Kansas City thereby inspiring his first full-length animated film.

Cinderella

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (2)

Officially, Cinderella is the second Disney princess.

The story of Cinderella portrays her as an extremely hardworking princess who’s kind, optimistic and gentle. After her mother passed away, her father remarried Lady Tremaine. Lady Tremaine had two daughters named Anastasia and Drizella who were both mean to Cinderella.

While she is forced to do all the chores, Cinderella still finds time to dream of a better life. She has many animal friends that help her during the day while she works and these friends include the mice named Jaq and Gus.

Cinderella wishes to attend a ball and when her stepmother forbids it, her fairy godmother appears and grants her wish. In addition, Cinderella is dressed in a beautiful, flowing white gown with long satin gloves and rides to the ball in a carriage.

However, her fairy godmother warns her to leave by midnight.

The prince is entranced with Cinderella and her beauty. When the clock strikes 12, Cinderella scurries out of the palace quickly and loses her glass slipper.

A small army is tasked with finding this young girl that captured the prince’s heart. Eventually, he slides the glass slipper onto Cinderella’s foot for a perfect fit.

Cinderella and the prince are married and live happily ever after. When people think of Disney princess names, oftentimes it is ‘Cinderella’ that first comes to mind.

Aurora – Sleeping Beauty

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (3)

Aurora is Disney’s third official princess from the fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. She is often described as shy, passive and gentle.

Aurora lives with her parents, King Stefan and Queen Leah, until her christening when she is cursed by an evil fairy named Maleficent who was upset she was not invited.

Because of this, Aurora is sent to live in a cottage in the woods with three good fairies (Flora, Fauna and Merriweather) who are protecting her from Maleficent’s curse. Her life is simple but happy, and she makes many friends with the woodland creatures near her home.

Aurora defies her guardians when she learns of her true heritage and sets out for her parent’s castle before she is 16 years old. Unfortunately, she is drawn to a room containing a spinning wheel where she pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep.

Prince Phillip, who had met Aurora while she was living in the cottage, comes to the castle and gives her a kiss that awakens the princess from her sleep. True love’s kiss conquers everything.

Ariel – The Little Mermaid

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (4)

Because Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was not a sensation like his previous two fairy tale adaptations, it took 30 years before he would make another Disney movie.

This time, though, he made a huge splash (pun intended!) with The Little Mermaid, an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s story of the same name.

Ariel is a mermaid and the daughter of King Triton. She is fascinated by the human world and collects all sorts of gadgets humans leave behind. Her sea creature friends, Flounder and Sebastian, join her watching a birthday party for Prince Eric, a handsome human she secretly falls for, aboard his royal yacht.

Storms came swiftly and knocked the boat around throwing Prince Eric into the waters. Ariel gets him safely to shore while singing to him with her magical voice. When the prince awakens, Ariel is nowhere to be seen, but he remembers her voice and vows to find her.

Ariel longs to be a human and privately makes a deal with Ursula, the sea witch. If the Sea Witch trades her tail for legs, she will let Ursula bottle her voice. Ariel then has 3 days to make Prince Eric kiss her. Unfortunately for Ariel, this spell comes at a price.

Ursula tricks Prince Eric into thinking she is the one that saved him that fretful night by using Ariel’s singing voice. They are about the marry when chaos descends with Ariels sea creature friends creating a distraction along with King Triton finally getting wind of everything that’s been happening.

In the end, Ursula is destroyed and King Triton finally realizes his daughter and Prince Eric are in love. He changes Ariel into a human so she and her prince can be together forever.

Belle – Beauty and the Beast

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (5)

In Beauty and the Beast, Belle is the daughter of an inventor and has gained a significant amount of intelligence over the years due to her love of books which provides her with an elevated vocabulary, an active imagination, and an open mind.

Belle is somewhat of a free woman for her time and resists being mistreated, undermined, humiliated, demeaned, or controlled by anyone, especially and by Gaston – who thinks he can have any woman he chooses. But, Belle resists him which infuriates him more.

When her father, Maurice, is taken captive by a beast living in a castle, Belle willingly trades her freedom for her father’s without much hesitation and manages to stand up against the Beast..

The Beast at first manages to make the situation of her predicament as a prisoner, never to see her father or dreams again, come crashing down in tears. But, Belle never loses hope and instead becomes his true friend and finally earns the love of the Beast.

Beauty and the Beast doesn’t fit the stereotypical ”Disney princess falls in love with the prince at first sight.”

In fact, Belle takes time to get to know the beast and forms a relationship with him before ever falling in love.

At the end of the movie, as all fairy tales go, Belle and her prince (now as a human as his curse was removed) live happily ever after.

Jasmine – Aladdin

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (6)

While not the lead role in this Disney film, Aladdin, Princess Jasmine is the only princess who is not based on a fairy tale. The story of Aladdin comes from a book called ‘One Thousand and One Nights’.

Jasmine is an independent Arabian woman who longs for more than the life she currently leads living under her father’s rules. Her father the Sultan, ruler of Agrabah, wants only the best for Jasmine and the people in his country.

Princess Jasmine doesn’t necessarily want to fall in love but she does want adventure and excitement in her life.

She is infuriated when she meets Aladdin, a street rat with questionable motives who makes false promises to win the heart of the princess in order to get what he wants.

Aladdin takes Jasmine on an epic journey filled with magic carpet rides, dangerous cave dives, and betrayal by his friend, Jafar.

In the end, Aladdin saves Jasmine from Jafar and they live happily ever after

Pocahontas

Pocahontas is a Native American woman who falls in love with a white man, John Smith.

The name, Pocahontas, means “Little Mischief”, and she certainly lived up to her name, often instigating trouble with the village boys.

One day, an English ship sails into the bay and Pocahontas runs out to see it. Captain John Smith is aboard and he’s immediately taken by this beautiful Indian maiden.

Pocahontas and the other Indians are invited to board the ship, but Pocahontas is warned not to go.

Ignoring her father’s warning, Pocahontas leaves with her friend Nakoma on a mission of peace. But she gets kidnapped by Captain Smith who takes her back onto his boat.

John Smith keeps Pocahontas a prisoner and there begins a friendship between the two. However, when she is almost discovered by another tribe of Native Americans, John Smith manages to get her back into the safety of the boat just in time.

Pocahontas figures that if she can save John Smith from being captured by her people, then he will leave her land in peace. So, Pocahontas goes to negotiate with her father and she begs him not to harm John Smith. But unfortunately, the negotiations don’t work out so well and a battle breaks out between the English sailors and her people.

Not the Right Time

Pocahontas knows that if she stays with the English sailors, she will never be accepted back into her tribe. So, she leaves with them, but not before making John Smith promise to come back for her if he ever wants to marry her.

John Smith does manage to make it back for Pocahontas, but she has already fallen in love with another man during the time that he was away.

In the end, Pocahontas and John Smith part ways as friends, and the truth of their love is never confessed.

After going through many struggles and obstacles, she helps stop a war between her people and the white settlers. She manages to maintain her strong, rooted foundation in her own culture while still learning about the new people that came into her life. These are lessons many of us can learn from Pocahontas.

Walt Disney created Pocahontas as a tribute to the Native Americans. In fact, Pocahontas is the first Disney princess based on an actual person in history.

Pocahontas is also one of the only Disney Princesses who didn’t meet a prince and marry him.

Mulan

The idea of Mulan was inspired by an ancient Chinese legend about Hua Mulan, a woman who dressed up like a man and joined the army in her father’s place while he was too ill to serve. She ended up doing more than fighting for her country though. She saved it.

Mulan was created during a time period where heroism, masculinity and honor were highly valued by the Chinese people.

The title character, Mulan, represents those exact same values – she’s strong, courageous and she is willing to risk her life to protect her family and country. Her story teaches us that we don’t always have to fight like a man in order to be strong – we can still stand up for what we believe in and fight for the country that we love.

Mulan did not fall in love with or marry a prince. Instead, she became a war hero and saved her entire country from danger.

Brave, intelligent and kind. Mulan is an official Disney princess because she was willing to do whatever it takes to save her people.

Tiana – Princess and the Frog

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (7)

Based on the Grimm Brothers fairy tale, The Frog Prince, Walt Disney created The Princess and the Frog, in 2009 as his 49th animated feature film.

Princess Tiana is the first African American Disney princess. She’s a hardworking, ambitious dreamer.

Tiana’s dream was to own her very own restaurant in New Orleans which she learned how to prepare the best meals from watching her father work as a chef at the family restaurant. Before he died, Tiana promised him that she would continue to work hard and one day fulfill her dream.

After Tiana’s father died, she continued cooking in the family restaurant but it was harder for her because now she had to do all of the chores on top of that. However, nothing could stop this strong and powerful princess from reaching her dreams – not even a spoiled prince who turned into a frog.

A wicked witch doctor turned Prince Naveen into a frog. Mistakenly, Naveen thought Tiana was a princess because he saw her in a beautiful ball gown and thought a kiss from her would turn him back into his human form. Unfortunately, the kiss only turned Tiana into a frog herself.

Tiana and Naveen spend most of their time in the movie as frogs. They run from alligators and make their way to the bayou where eventually they fall in love and get married. Their kiss transforms their bodies back to their human form.

Eventually, Tiana does get her restaurant, Tiana’s Palace, and marries a prince and, of course, they live happily ever after.

Rapunzel – Tangled

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (8)

Princesses are often known for being saved by a prince but in Tangled, it’s actually Flynn Rider who saves Princess Rapunzel.

Rapunzel spent all 18 years of her life stuck in a secluded tower. Mother Gothel, whom Rapunzel thinks is her mother, stole Rapunzel away from the king and queen because Rapunzel’s long, golden hair had magical qualities that prevented aging.

Without any human contact, she spends her days painting the walls to pass the time.

The first time Rapunzel meets Flynn, she screams at him and throws a frying pan at his head. He had just stolen her intended crown from the palace and found this tower to hide out in. Rapunzel knocks him out cold and finds this crown in his bag. She tells him he can get it back if he takes her to see the lanterns the king and queen release each year. Little does she know, these lanterns are meant for her as they are released on her birthday as it’s the King and queen’s way of remembering their lost daughter.

Mother Gothel finds Rapunzel and takes her home telling her that she is the only one that Rapunzel can trust.

At this same time, Rapunzel is putting two and two together and realizes the connection between the lantern festival and what she is painting on the walls of her tower. She realizes she is the lost princess and confronts Mother Gothel.

True Love

Flynn climbs his way back to the tower where Rapunzel is being kept and finds her gagged and bound by Mother Gothel. He frees her but then is stabbed by Mother Gothel. In an effort to thwart Rapunzel’s magical hair power, he cuts off her long golden locks and it immediately turns brown.

At the same time, Mother Gothel ages to look like an old hag.

Rapunzel hurries over to help Flynn, but he has taken a wicked stab wound. She starts to cry and one of her tears falls on Flynn and magically heals him. She still had some powers left in her after all.

These two complete opposites are what make this princess story so unique.

Merida – Brave

Merida is the first Disney princess to originate from a Pixar film, Brave.

She is the princess of DunBroch, Scotland and she’s known for her unruly red hair that she has not yet mastered how to control.

Just like any 16-year-old girl, Merida just wants to be free and do whatever she pleases. But in order to inherit the crown one day, she must first follow the customs and traditions of her kingdom.

She is put through a gauntlet of lessons to prepare her for meeting suitors and choosing one that will be the lucky suitor to marry her and become King Consort.

This tradition doesn’t sit well with Merida and she wants to be free from it all; to make her own choices in life.

She’s just like any other 16-year-old girl in that she wants to stand up for herself and she doesn’t want to have anyone else tell her what is best for her.

What makes Merida so special, however, is that she is not a doe-eyed princess looking for her prince charming. She is feisty, brash and doesn’t care what other people think.

The witch who helps Merida make a wish ends up turning the princess’s mother into a bear after she makes an offhand comment. This creates a lot of humor and tension as Merida tries to fix the spell and is forced to come face to face with her bear-mother. In the end, Merida and her mother become closer than ever before (once her mom is human again, of course).

Merida is the first Disney princess not to have a love interest in the storyline. In addition, she did not stem from a fairy or real-life historical figure.

Moana

Moana is the last official Disney princess to be crowned in 2019. She is the daughter of a chief who one day decides she wants to explore new horizons and go beyond where her people have ever gone.

Moana has the famous Disney once-upon-a-time song as she opens up about being an everyday girl from a small village living on an island. What makes her so different is that she feels a bit of regret that her island has been in the same place for a thousand years. She doesn’t want to be stuck on an island, she wants adventure and exploration.

This is what leads Moana to make the decision to explore the seas and find out what lies beyond where her people have ever gone before. She finds herself going head-to-head with a demigod who challenges her in every way.

Like Merida, Moana is also brave, strong and ambitious, but she’s also compassionate.

Moana does not marry a prince, but she is a Disney princess because she is the daughter of a chief.

Moana is also not a princess in the traditional sense because she doesn’t “rule” an area or kingdom like some of the other Disney Princesses do.

Disney Princesses Castle

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (9)

Did you know the Shanghai Disneyland castle, the Enchanted Storybook Castle pictured above, is the only castle dedicated to all the Disney princesses?

Disney World in Orlando boasts a castle built specifically for Cinderella. On the other hand, Disneyland in Anaheim honors Sleeping Beauty with its iconic castle.

But Shanghai’s Disney Park takes it up a notch by celebrating the entire roster of Disney princesses! Just opened in 2016, this castle is also the largest.

FUN FACTS about all the Disney Princesses

Who was the first Disney princess?

Snow White is Disney’s first original princess. The movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was released in 1937 as Walt Disney’s first animated movie.

What are the first three original Disney princess names?

The three original Disney princesses are Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora.

What is the Disney Princess collection?

In the late 1990s, the Walt Disney Company saw the huge draw the princess movies had on young girls. They decided to capitalize on this by creating a Disney Princess franchise that included Disney princess movies, dolls, clothing, games, puzzles and everything in between. Thus, the Disney princess line was born and is a successful part of the Disney empire.

What qualifies as an official Disney princess name?

Not all princesses are official Disney princesses. While only the Mouse House knows the exact rules for becoming part of the Disney Princess franchise, there are some things that are known to be true.

Here are 4 unwritten rules for becoming an official Disney princess:

  1. Must play a lead role in either a Disney or Pixar movie
  2. Must be human or look like a human
  3. Must be royal by birth, married into royalty or have performed a heroic act
  4. Must have great appeal to audiences

In addition, the princesses have the ability to communicate with animals as well as have inner and outer beauty.

What are the Disney Renaissance princess names?

The Disney princess names that correspond to the Disney Rennaisance are Ariel, Belle, Jasmine Pocahontas, Mulan. They are considered Renaissance because they are a new beginning for the Walt Disney Studios.

It had been 30 years since Disney Animation created a princess movie (the last being Sleeping Beauty). Now, the princesses are more self-aware and are action takers compared to the first three princess movies. These newer princesses are determined, adventurous and strong-willed.

Is there a coronation ceremony to celebrate their new princess role?

Most of the time, yes, there is a coronation ceremony where all the princesses in Disney gather to welcome their newest Disney princess.

Here are the latest inductions:

  • Raya had an induction ceremony at Disneyland Paris in August 2022.
  • Moana did not have a public coronation ceremony but was inducted in 2019.
  • In 2013, Walt Disney World hosted Merida’s coronation ceremony in front of Cinderella’s castle in The Magic Kingdom.
  • Rapunzel was coronated during a promotional event at Kensington Palace in London in 2011.
  • The Palace Hotel in New York City proudly celebrated Tiana’s addition to the princess lineup in 2010.

Who are the lost princesses – those that have been removed from being an official Disney princess?

Several Disney characters have been removed from their official Disney princess status. The most popular one is Tinker Bell. That’s okay because Tinker Bell got her own franchise – The Disney Fairies franchise. This is a successful franchise that includes several movies (my favorite is Tinker Bell and the Never Beast) and the addition of more fairies to the cast.

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (10)

The second lost Disney princess is Esmerelda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The reason for her removal is in contrast to Tinker Bell’s. This movie didn’t have the popularity and selling points the other princess movies has – when it came down to it, this movie just didn’t make Disney money.

Who was the last Disney princess to be coronated?

Raya was the last official Disney princess. She was added to the lineup in 2022 at a ceremony at Disneyland Paris.

Why isn’t Elsa an official Disney princess?

Disney Princess Names 2024: List of all Disney Princesses (11)

Elsa, along with Anna, is not on the Disney princess names list because they have their own Frozen franchise. Frozen was such a success in its own right, that it didn’t need to join the princess franchise. Instead, they are marketed as separate items each with its own line of dolls, clothes, etc. In the end, it just made Disney more money to keep them separate.

How old are the Disney princesses?

You can find the princesses at Disney World in several places, but if you want to meet several at one time make a dining reservation either at Akershus Banquet Hall in Epcot or Cinderella’s Magic Table in The Magic Kingdom.
