Who Is Setting Sail With Moana and Maui in 'Moana 2'? (2024)

The ocean chooses her and her only. Disney’s beloved island princess and fearless Wayfinder returns to the shores of Motunui in Moana 2. Set three years after the events of the first movie, Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) continues to brave the sea of Oceania with the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and her seafaring crew. But when Moana receives an unexpected message from her wayfinding ancestors, the young voyager discovers that sinister forces threaten to destroy the peace of her home island. Braving into new territories and swimming into the deep depths of the sea, nothing can stand in Moana’s way.

Auliʻi Cravalho

Moana

Cravalho stars as Moana, the bright-spirited and adventurous daughter of the Chief of Motunui. The last time audiences saw her, Moana braved the island spirits and restored the heart of Te Fiti to its rightful owner and restored peace to her home. A lover of the sea, the ocean is Moana’s second home - to be enveloped by the sea’s crystal blue waters is to be hugged by the fabric of life itself. Coming from a long line of wayfinders, she knows her way around her home island.

However, like any other young girl, Moana deals with bouts of self-doubt. Born to stand out from the crowd, Moana’s not afraid to tackle new obstacles and to fight for what’s right. Even so, she’s rarely ventured out of Motunui, adding more insecurity to her inexperience. But as Moana has proven last time, she’s fearless and willing to take risks. As long as she has her loving family and the community of her island by her side, Moana protects her village with tenacity all while keeping her voyaging dreams alive.

Besides her work with Disney, Cravalho played Lilette Suarez in the NBC series Rise and Jos Cleary-Lopez in The Power. Most recently, she starred as Janis 'Imi'ike in the 2024 reimagining of Mean Girls.

Dwayne Johnson

Maui

Johnson stars as Maui, the demigod of the South Pacific responsible for guarding humankind. According to legend, Maui is described as carrying a giant fish hook that allows him to shapeshift into any form. He’s also granted the gift of immortality and superhuman strength. However, his powers come to him at a dark cost. The child of human parents, Maui is thrown into the sea as a baby. Instead of facing an unfortunate death, Maui is saved by the gods, and later on would grow up under their care. Unfortunately, no amount of love or compassion could save Maui from the trauma of his past.

Unable to move on from what his parents did to him, Maui tries to regain their love and validation by providing mankind with everything they could possibly want. Using his strength, Maui provided homes for humans by bringing islands together and stealing fire from the earth’s core to keep them warm - amongst other deeds. Feared by fellow villains and sea monsters, Maui’s name rings a bell in Oceania lore. He’s no gracious god, for he’s often mischievous and has no regard for human life. But upon his chance encounter with Moana, he changes his mind.

Johnson had his breakthrough with Disney thanks to the family comedy The Game Plan, followed by his role as Jack Bruno in Race to Witch Mountain. He’s also set to star in Monster Jam.

Temuera Morrison

Chief Tui

Temuera Morrison stars as Chief Tui, the former chief and village leader of Motunui. Outside his community duties, he’s known as the father of Moana. Before settling for a life on shore, Chief Tui made a name for himself as an ambitious voyager. Unfortunately, his dreams were dampened following a traumatic event at sea. Since then, he’s never dipped his feet into the ocean out of fear. To protect his fellow village people, he strictly forbids them from going beyond the island’s reef - the same rule goes for Moana.

As a leader, Chief Tui protects Motunui with a gregarious spirit. He hopes that his daughter will follow in his footsteps, but secretly, he knows that Moana’s heart is calling for the ocean. With their clashing personalities, Moana is often upset by her father’s stubbornness. Although it seems that way, Chief Tui’s hard-headedness comes from good intentions. After seeing firsthand the dangers of voyaging not just to himself, but those around him, the thought of his daughter being engulfed by the sea frightens him. But as the first movie has shown, Chief Tui would later on trust Moana’s abilities enough to not just venture into the sea, but save the entirety of Motunui.

Morrison gained prominence for playing Jango Fett in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Continuing his Star Wars streak, the actor would later voice Boba Fett in all editions of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Nicole Scherzinger

Sina

Nicole Scherzinger stars as Sina, the wife of Chief Tui. Unlike her husband, Sina has always believed in Moana’s potential. As the glue of the family, Sina understands where Chief Tui’s worry comes from, but at the same time, she supports Moana’s love of the sea. Playful and strong-willed, it’s clear where Moana gets her fearless spirit from.

A pop culture icon thanks to her musical stint with the Pussycat Dolls, Scherzinger continues to make numerous TV appearances, including competing on Season 10 of Dancing with the Stars and serving as a panelist on The Masker Singer.

Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda

Simea

Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda stars as Simea, the youngest daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, and Moana’s little sister. In Moana 2, Simea is three years old. The Disney sequel marks Lambert-Tsuda’s voice-acting debut.

Rose Matafeo

Loto

Rose Matafeo stars as Loto, a member of Moana’s wayfinding crew. As the brains of the clan, Loto’s got the eccentric, quirky attitude to keep things light-hearted on the ship. Matafeo previously starred in Starstruck, Funny Girls, and Golden Boy.

David Fane

Kele

David Fane stars as Kele, another member of Moana’s crew. Unlike the other vivacious folks on the ship, Kele is the grumpy old farmer who rarely smiles. But his long age comes with wisdom. With an expert knowledge of agriculture and vegetable crops, Kele ensures that no stomach on Motunui is empty. Fan previously starred in The Tattooist and Bro’Town.

Hualālai Chung

Moni

Hualālai Chung stars as Moni, the final member of Moana’s crew. As a storyteller, Moni has a way with words and isn’t shy about using them to tell tales and legends of the island. Chung is set to .

Awhimai Fraser

Matangi

Awhimai Fraser stars as Matangi, a new antagonist in Moana 2. While not much is known about her yet, from the trailer alone, this supernatural new character is a dangerous threat Moana should be wary of. With the ability to control bats, Matangi has more mysterious tricks up her sleeve. Fraser is best known for Encounters and Ahikaroa.

Other Actors and Actresses in 'Moana 2'

Alan Tudyk stars as Heihei, the bumbling, clueless rooster who’s prone to getting himself into accidents. Best known as the “village idiot” of Motunui, Heihei serves as the movie’s comedic relief. If living on shore is already bad enough, Heihei is about to have the trip of their lifetime when it accidentally finds itself on Maoan’s canoe. Tudyk previously starred in movies such as 28 Days, A Knight’s Tale, and voiced King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph. Gerald Ramsey also joins the movie as Tautai Vasa, voicing one of Moana’s ancestors.
